Poor vs Rich

Imagine this.  One night your job that you have worked in for 20+ years since graduating high school was just snatched from you.  No reason due to your performance, just the fact that you are "too expensive."  I'm sure you would get pretty mad and you would have good reason to.  Nothing that happened was in your control.  All that blood, sweat, and tears you put in, gone just like that.  It might be difficult to buy groceries or even pay rent on time, and debt may slowly kill you. Well, that's what NAFTA, or the North American Free Trade Agreement caused.  Seems like a dumb thing to implement right? Taking people's jobs away who are working hard and paying taxes to support the country.  Well it's more complicated than just that. Now I want to imagine that you are the CEO of some major car manufacturing company.  You would want to make your goods for as cheap as possible to maximize your revenue, thus increasing your profit and, "fattening yo...

Tom's Torture

Image
It was 5 years after Gatsby's death now.  Tom was sitting at a bar counter in downtown Chicago.  Alone.  He ordered for his 3rd drink of the night still thinking about the decision he made 5 years prior.  He could never come clean to anyone that he felt guilty about the death of Gatsby.  Most of all he couldn't admit it to Daisy who was heartbroken since she heard the news.   The death changed Tom so much, he hasn't had another mistress since.  Nevermind that, he hasn't even set eyes on another women. Deep down in his heart he knew that Gatsby had a sort of unconditional love for Daisy.  He could never be the same as him (in a loving standpoint anyway).  He knew that he shouldn't be with Daisy right now.  It should be Jay Gatsby and Daisy, at a home in Louisville.  But no.  Gatsby was dead.  Because of me, Tom Buchanan.   Tom thought long and hard.  Alone.  Staring at his reflection in the mirror a...

The Present is a Gift

Image
One of my favorite quotes that I saw on my TikTok for your page this last week was, "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift." It was said by one of the most philosophical men of our time.  The one and only Master Oogway, the one from Kung-Fu Panda.  Throughout Gatsby, it always seems like he's looking forward to building a perfect future based on his past.  For example, he dreams of getting back with Daisy as it used to be in the past.  But he fails to realize that times have changed, and it simply isn't that simple.   When Nick brings this up to him Gatsby says, "Can't repeat the past? Why of course you can."  He tries to use his wealth and fortune to show off to Daisy, try and win her back, and do the past all over again fixing it this time.  But the issue when doing this is that he completely misses out on the present.  I mean for crying out loud this man doesn't even enjoy his own parties, which keep in mind are some...

A Tale of Two Times

Image
Let's take a trip back in time to the 1920's.  Better known as the " Roaring Twenties ".  I don't need to tell you this, but life then was way different than life is now.  It was a whole different ballgame.  I mean, they didn't even have iPhones for crying out loud. No scrolling on TikTok for hours, just jazz music, parties, and trying to chase the "American dream." The world-renowned book, "The Great Gatsby," captures this sense perfectly.  We can see this perfectly from the glamorous houses and evening parties to Nick's dreams of becoming a bondsman in New York City.  While these ideas might not seem that far-fetched in today's world, there were key differences in just the societal norms and expectations.  Just take one glance at the way Daisy is expected to act.  She's supposed to be an obedient stay-at-home wife ignorant of whatever Tom is doing.  Daisy even goes to show this byv saying, "I hope she'll be a fool, th...
