Tom's Torture

It was 5 years after Gatsby's death now.  Tom was sitting at a bar counter in downtown Chicago.  Alone.  He ordered for his 3rd drink of the night still thinking about the decision he made 5 years prior.  He could never come clean to anyone that he felt guilty about the death of Gatsby.  Most of all he couldn't admit it to Daisy who was heartbroken since she heard the news.

The death changed Tom so much, he hasn't had another mistress since.  Nevermind that, he hasn't even set eyes on another women. Deep down in his heart he knew that Gatsby had a sort of unconditional love for Daisy.  He could never be the same as him (in a loving standpoint anyway).  He knew that he shouldn't be with Daisy right now.  It should be Jay Gatsby and Daisy, at a home in Louisville.  But no.  Gatsby was dead.  Because of me, Tom Buchanan.

Tom thought long and hard.  Alone.  Staring at his reflection in the mirror above the bartender, he came to a realization after all these years; he admired Gatsby.  In a way he wanted to be like him.  Being able to achieve something by himself.  Make it from "Rags to Riches".  Dream big and shot for the stars.  If only he had the opportunity to go back in time and just change the past.  Maybe go back and warn Gatsby about Wilson.

Anyway it was all too late for that now.  All he could do now is enjoy his good old Gin Rickey.  He downed that and ordered for another. In which the bartender came back with one shortly.  Tom Buchanan raised this newly acquired glass and muttered the words:

"This one is for you, old sport."

  1. Avi this fanfic was very creative. Thinking about the aftermath of Gatsby's death in the perspective of Toms. I like the contrastiing difference in Tom's personality and character in the real story compared to yours. In your version, Tom is feeling remorse/guilt and not cowering behind his wealth.

  2. I liked your creative aspect you put on this, and gave me a new perspective on what Tom and other characters may do after Gatsbys death.

  3. I really like this perspective. I think this perspective is very creative but I believe Tom's personality is way too arrogant to admit any guilt or sorrow, especially to someone who tried to steal his wife.

  4. I like your perspective on how the characters react on Gatsby’s death. I also do agree that Tom would feel remorse, especially after a long time when he achieves some clarity on the subject. I also really like the last line as a way to honor Gatsby’s legacy.
