A Tale of Two Times

Let's take a trip back in time to the 1920's.  Better known as the "Roaring Twenties".  I don't need to tell you this, but life then was way different than life is now.  It was a whole different ballgame.  I mean, they didn't even have iPhones for crying out loud. No scrolling on TikTok for hours, just jazz music, parties, and trying to chase the "American dream." The world-renowned book, "The Great Gatsby," captures this sense perfectly.  We can see this perfectly from the glamorous houses and evening parties to Nick's dreams of becoming a bondsman in New York City.  While these ideas might not seem that far-fetched in today's world, there were key differences in just the societal norms and expectations.  Just take one glance at the way Daisy is expected to act.  She's supposed to be an obedient stay-at-home wife ignorant of whatever Tom is doing.  Daisy even goes to show this byv saying, "I hope she'll be a fool, that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little girl" (Scott F. Fitzgerald) when her daughter is born.  I don't think one person would have that reaction today if their daughter was born.  They want them to be smart, go out there get a job, and not just be obedient and ignorant to the world around them.

Even more, I want to come back to the TikTok idea mentioned earlier.  In the 2020s, we are constantly surrounded by technology everywhere we go.  Heck, I can even go as far as to say we were completely raised by them.  It's safe to say that it has taken over our lives.  However, while this is true, is it really good? Everything seems superficial or not real at times.  For example, people's posts on Instagram can sometimes feel this way.  They are made in a way to get more likes rather than just capture their real life.  This can even be connected back to The Great Gatsby, as while Tom and Daisy showcase their giant and glamorous house, there are deeper issues beyond what the eye sees.

You see, while society has changed over time for the better there are still some aspects that seem and remain the same.

  1. Hi Avi! I like that you focused on things that make our times different, showing the different priorities in today's world and the "Roaring Twenties." I also like that you used photos as a visual for your blog's main idea of the differences in society's evolution.

  2. I liked how you used a small summary in the begining and then tied it into your connection to the Great Gatsby. Also i like how you kept your intended audience in mind while writing by using examples of things we are used to
