More Money, more problems
As a sports fan, I love getting a glimpse into the off-court antics of professional athletes and seeing how they are handling themselves for the season. The Onion didn't fail to deliver, their recent piece about Washington Wizards coach Brian Keefe cracking down on hotel room charges had me quite intrigued as it's really not something you would expect an NBA coach making millions of dollars cracking down on.
Keefe reportedly lectured his team about how finically damaging bottled water can be. Nothing was said about his teams turnovers, defensive schemes, or their record (11-48 at the moment), instead bottled water was the focus. And not just any bottled water, but the kind that sits in the hotel mini fridge, waiting to financially ruin unsuspecting guests. According to the article, he urged his players to instead use the just as delectable free tap water in their bathrooms or bring reusable bottles to refill down the hall. Is it practical? 100%, I'm sure your parents would say something similar, but it is hilarious to imagine an NBA coach making this a priority.
But there were some even more facts that had me quite intrigued. The warning about the $10 Toblerones. The suggestion to load up on free breakfast because they wouldn’t be eating again until dinner. The order to keep Jordan Poole hidden from hotel staff to avoid extra room charges. It felt as if these group of professional athletes, making millions of dollars a year, are running some kind of circus, cutting down on whatever cost they could, as I'm sure that extra couple hundred dollars might just make an NBA franchise bankrupt.
At the end of the day, I really appricated The Onion for shining a little insight on the financial struggles of NBA teams these dats: overpriced snacks, sneaky hotel fees, and the absolute necessity of free breakfast. Heres a link to the article if you want to read it: Click Here

Wow Avi, this was really interesting. I agree with you that the cost of chocolates and bottled water is the last thing the wizards should be worrying about with how bad they are.
ReplyDeleteAvi, I like how you took on the tone of the article by even using sarcasm stating that the water bottles would make the franchise go bankrupt. I also agree that these are the wrong problems they are focusing on.
